Hann Lucas is an abstract painter based in Folkestone Creative Quarter. For her first solo show in Folkestone she has created an entirely new body of work that partly responds to the change in environment moving here from Cambridge where she graduated last year.
‘Subliminal flux” is a series of abstract paintings, that explore the complexity of movement, space and time. Applying Folkestone’s changing land/cityscapes to her practice, Lucas immerses herself into the idea of the ‘sedentary’ and ‘nomad’; this exhibition explores the relationship between still and moving space and how the two interact.
Lucas works instinctively and gesturally when applying materials to the canvas and this process is the focus of her practice. The paintings are essentially a by-product of the actions and decisions that are made when the painting tools interact with the canvas. This allows her to paint in a way that channels subconscious primal behaviour; with marks made through gestures and sensations (gut feelings).
